What are the new requirements?

Most close protection operatives completed a first aid qualification to initially receive their license. Upon renewing it after 3 years there was no requirement to renew the first aid. The requirements have now changed. When you renew, you are required to complete a Close protection Top-Up course with a valid first aid qualification.

Those that work for CTR Secure Services. Must always have a valid first aid qualification to work for us as it is a client requirement.

CTR is constantly receiving emails regarding the first aid qualification requirements. More over what is, and is not accepted by the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

The introduction of the 2021 and 2022 suite of security industry authority licence Linked Qualifications. Includes a requirement for all learners to hold a Level 3 First Aid at work or higher qualification. With no less than 12 months validity prior to commencing the course.

Within the security industry authority get training document. Clear specifications are provided with repeated reference to the word qualification when specifying the first aid requirements.

  • Reference to the Health and Safety, First Aid Regulations 1981. The date of issue and confirmation the certificate is valid for three years.
  • If training is first aid at work. A certificate must list the learning outcomes of the syllabus, that candidates have been assessed.

This implies that it is possible for a non-regulated certificate to be accepted. However there remains a burden of proof. To ascertain that the certificate has been issued as a result of the learner attending a first aid course and successfully passing the assessments. With equivalency of standards and assessment scrutiny as a regulated qualification. Which due to the comparability requirement of all Ofqual regulated qualifications. Will meet the standards identified within the HSE document GEIS3.

So, unless you have a regulated Ofqual certified qualification such as the regulated first aid at work, RTACC, FREC 3 or higher, then you will not be able to complete the top up course.

Because of the potentially dangerous nature of their work, CPOs must be extensively trained in various security and soft skills, physical intervention techniques. They also need to have a thorough understanding of emergency medical procedures. This is because they may be the first responders in the event of an attack or accident.

Why Do CPOs Need Medical Training?

Medical training courses will enable CPO employees to instantly deliver advanced medical procedures, hence prolonging a patient’s survival rate.

There are many reasons why close protection officers need to have medical training. Let’s look at them now in more detail:

To Be Prepared for Any Situation

No one likes to think about emergencies, but they can happen anytime. That’s why it’s so important for CPOs to have medical training. With the right skills, CPOs can be prepared for any situation.

For example, imagine you’re in the middle of a meeting when one of your colleagues suddenly collapses. Would you know what to do? If you’ve had medical training, you would. You could assess the situation and provide critical care until help arrived.

In an emergency, every second counts. That’s why CPOs need to be prepared. With medical training, they can act quickly and potentially save a life. So, if you’re a CPO, ensure you’re always up-to-date on your first aid certification. It could make all the difference in an emergency.

To Provide Immediate Care

The first few minutes after an accident or attack are critical in many cases. CPOs with medical training can provide immediate care to their clients, potentially saving their lives. This training is helpful for CPOs and anyone who wants to be prepared in an emergency.

First aid and medical courses are widely available and relatively inexpensive, so there is no excuse not to be prepared. With the knowledge and skills learned in these medical training courses, CPOs can make a difference in the lives of their clients by providing immediate care in a time of need.

To Minimize the Effects of Injury

Accidents happen, even to the best of us. But when they do, it’s important to know how to minimise the effects of the injury. That’s where medical training courses come in. By learning how to properly splint a broken bone or provide first aid for a burn, CPOs can help their clients avoid further damage and get on the road to recovery as quickly as possible.

In today’s fast-paced world, knowledge is power. And when it comes to accidents and injuries, that power can mean the difference between a full recovery and a long battle ahead.

To Improve Their Job Performance

Medical training can improve a close protection officer’s job performance. In addition to giving the officer the skills and knowledge necessary to handle medical emergencies, it also instils confidence in clients.

Knowing that their protection officer is knowledgeable and capable can give clients a greater sense of security, which is essential for any close protection officer. Furthermore, medical training can also help to improve an officer’s ability to assess and manage risk.

A close protection operative can better protect their client from harm by understanding how to identify and respond to potential medical risks. Consequently, medical training is an important asset for any close protection operative. It will improve and enhance their job performance.
